Ara realis irrealis

Ara realis irrealis is filmed inside the Antwerp Zoo which is located in the middle of the city, where sounds of the animals inside the Zoo merge with the sounds from the city. A voice of a woman reading grammar rules accompanies the images of the Ara Militaris in their cage. She’s preparing a class for newcomers who are learning Dutch. Sentence construction. The tenses. How to formulate hypothetical situations. And how to talk about reality. The language becomes palpably abstract. Who invented these rules? And why? How does language create exclusion?
By combining grammar and zoology both their artificial mechanisms for comprehension and control are emphasized.
