2019 | De Garage, Mechelen

With this exhibition I explored the interaction between memories of familiar places and the changing use of public space and the degradation of places and objects.
The sculptural objects are parts of furniture of previous exhibitions that took place in the space. By tilting and playfully using them in another way, their meaning shifted, evoking a choreography within the space.

Chloé Op de Beeck likes to avoid the centre. Instead, her focus is set on what is called – in cinematographic terms – the ‘background’ or ‘extras’ to evade or even paralyse narrativity. Her isolated images and recordings of repetitive movements hint towards potential stories, yet they never come to a culmination. Slowly, the viewer is immersed in her way of seeing, arriving in a state of extreme sensitivity. With heightened attention one follows her through photographs and videos and objects – found or made – which reflect a deep affection and tactile curiosity for the world, as if discovering it for the very first time. The viewer takes on the artists position – and vice versa – moving through an open choreography of different media in dialogue with the space.

For the exhibition at De Garage, Chloé Op de Beeck investigated the local context of Mechelen in relation to her own history. Her gaze – which is both distant and intimate – is reflected in her images which aim to renew hers and our relationship with the location and its own reality.
